In the lagoon, the situation was no better. While the surviving Latins was known fishermen, their skills wasn't able to protect themselves from the most common fish in the lagoon. A fish, about the size of a hand, was found to hiding motionless everywhere. It could easily be picked up by hand, but if it bit you, the bite would be highly painful, paralyze you within minutes, and kill you within days. Due to the delicate state of the corpse of someone who had died from these bites, the fish was called [[Carnackfish]], flesh water fish. Although the fish's bite was lethal, some people tried eating the fish. Fortunately for them, the fish wasn't lethal after being cooked, but it was still not a useful food source, as its poisonous meat would still cause pains, spasms and minor paralysis. Eating the Carnackfish wasn't much more pleasant than being bitten by it.

With both the fishes and the fruits unwelcoming, the people had to put their faith in the Cere and the Batala, unfortunately it failed disastrously. While the Cere grew spectacularly, it wouldn't set seed, and the Batala alone couldn't sustain the population even with those few edible plants and animal found on the islands. Illte (Delang: іљте (illte), IPA: /iɭte/, Kirsh: il.te, CXS: il`te), officially Kingdom of Illte, is a unitary Democratically Elective Monarchic Totalitarian democracy whose territory comprises the Homi-inhabited tropical and subtropical portion of Illte. Further south lies the, yet to be claimed, forest belt. The millennium city, Carumill, being the most southern Illomi city, boarders the forest belt. From recent discovery, it has become known that the forest belt is inhabited by the non-Homi Panomi species, who has been responsible for several attacks on Carumill citizens over the last hundred years.

Etymology

Illte consist of the Delang word for island (Delang: іљ (ill), IPA: /iɭ/, Kirsh: il., CXS: il`) and the suffix for continent (Delang: те (te), IPA: /te/, Kirsh: te, CXS: te), an abbreviation of the word for continent (Delang: телјен (teljen), IPA: /teljen/, Kirsh: teljen, CXS: teljen), which is a derivative of the word for earth, or land, (Delang: телј (telj), IPA: /telj/, Kirsh: telj, CXS: telj). The literal meaning of Illte is thus Island Continent.

The Demonym, illomi (Delang: Іљомі (Illomi), IPA: /iɭu:mi/, Kirsh: il.u:mi, CXS: il`u:mi), is a contraction of island and Homi (Delang: Ƕомі (Homi), IPA: /hu:mi/, Kirsh: hu:mi, CXS: hu:mi), meaning Island People.

History

Prehistory

Little is known about the continent from prehistoric time, but several discoveries has been made. In several places, the sea floor contains signs of previous settlement. Carbon dating estimate these settlements to be at least 10,000 years old. From the almost random placement of these settlement, it is surmised that all of Tejmokh once was dry land.

Start of Illomi history

The Kingdom of Illte was established in 22 a.Q, by the coronation of Qakhomatze. At the time of establishment, The Kingdom of Illte only consisted of the three settlements Tellmarsh, Grune and Umojde, each on their own island in The Tripoola Lagoon, it's circumferential skerries, and Mezeqeuy, the then known western part of The Equatorial Barrier Reef. After the first census of the population, in 25 a.Q, it was recorded that Qakhomatze ruled over 8,257 subjects (2,912 men, 2,762 women and 2,583 children). It is estimated that there was more than 9,000 people on the ships, unfortunately, by 25 a.Q, starvation had already started culling the population.

The first thing done by the refugees after having navigated into the Tripoola Lagoon, was to start gathering food and sowing the store of Cere and Batala. The people learned immediately that the nature of Illte was completely foreign. The only water available was saltwater from the lagoon. The fruits on the trees either smelled like human waste, or smelled inviting, but killed you when you eat it. Neither cooking or baking seemed to made the fruits less poisonous.

Due to the delicate state of the corpse of someone who had died from these bites, the fish was called Carnackfish, flesh water fish.

Starvation was now a way of life for the early Illomi.

By the census of 50, the population had shrunk to less than 7,000 inhabitants (2,154 men, 1,972 women and 2,857 children).
